Kerr & Smith LogoCase Study, Kerr & Smith (Bronze Award)

Kerr and Smith was founded in 1975 by Jim Smith and Bill Kerr and both remain as joint Managing Directors today. In the early part of their business life they were solely commercial vehicle repairers and worked from small premises in Cumnock, near Jim Smiths home.  From these humble beginnings grew the Kerr and Smith of today – a vibrant and successful business operating over three locations, with a turnover of 23m and a staff of 150.

Both Jim Smith and Bill Kerr realise the benefits of building and maintaining good relationships with their local community. Their company regularly provides both financial and in kind support to local groups and individuals and encourages staff members to participate in community activities. A structured system is in place to ensure that all applications for financial support are given equal consideration and detailed records are maintained.  But it is not only financial support that is offered to the community.  The company also takes part in industrial awareness days and work experience programmes with local schools and have recently been involved in a project with Yipworld.com. In addition, four of the staff at Cumnock are retained fire fighters, of which Jim Smith is one.  This is a big commitment on behalf of the company, but one which is given gladly.

The company utilises advanced modern technology and are in the process of equipping all recovery and parts delivery vehicles with GPRS navigation equipment.  They have also achieved IIP and have ISO9002 accreditation.  Kerr and Smith have a high local profile with a good local customer base. They are proud of the fact that they are still dealing with customers they first met 30 years ago.  This is a company that understands the true value of maintaining a good relationship with the community.  We are delighted to award them the ABIC Award for Community Excellence.
