B&Q Logo Case Study, B&Q

Social responsibility within B&Q falls under 4 categories; Environment, Diversity, Ethical and Community. There are two learning and developing training modules on Sustainability and Diversity, which are compulsory induction modules, and must be completed by all staff.

B&Q believe in supporting local community groups, and their Better Neighbour Grant is open to all local groups including Brownies, Hospitals, Charity Organisations etc. Staff members can become involved by viewing the Social Responsibility notice board in the staff canteen. Staff participate in Children in Need, in which all staff in the store dress up to raise money for the charity. B&Q currently have five community projects, which have been approved for this year. They assess the impact that this has by the feedback that they receive from the recipients, and they feel that they have made a difference to their neighbourhood.

Mystery shopper reports are done twice a month to judge customer service in the store. The staff appreciate having their names mentioned for having given good service. Health and safety is taken very seriously, and all duty managers must complete a health and safety walk round of the whole store as part of their daily routine. All appliances are regularly checked and a health and safety audit is carried out by the local authority.

New employees attend a Welcome Day at B&Q university, where they are issued with a starter toolkit including employee handbook, apron, pen, badge etc. An appraisal system is in place which allows staff to progress through pay levels. There is also an annual pay increment which is determined by Head Office.
