The latest winner of the Ayrshire Business in the Community Bronze award is Cumnock based yipworld.com. yipworld.com, which recently celebrated its fifth birthday, was originally launched as a state-of-the-art youth project, offering social, educational and recreational facilities to young people aged between 10 and 25. The project also has its own lively and informative website, www.yipworld.org, providing information to young people on a range of issues such as health, personal safety, education and training. Janice Hendry, project manager, describes yipworld.com as a ‘successful Social Enterprise that identifies gaps in service within the community’. One of the most recent successes is the yipworld.com after-school club, open between 3pm and 6pm every weekday afternoon, allowing kids time to meet friends, and providing peace of mind for parents or carers, who know that their children are safe. Young people can use the internet in a comfortable and safe environment. Yipworld.com are winners of the Scottish Enterprise Ayrshire Business in the Community Award 2003/4. It is part of the yipworld.com ethos to encourage staff to develop their skills to full potential. Examples of recent voluntary work/events undertaken by yipworld.com are:

  • Participation in swimathon at local swimming pool to raise funds for needy children via the Butlins Company
  • Sponsored walk for the Ayrshire Hospice
  • Co-ordination of collection point for the Happy Days children’s charity recycling mobile phones and ink cartridges
  • Respite home in Cumnock for children with severe special needs

Yipworld.com believe in using local suppliers and services in order to support the local economy. Customer service is another of their priorities and they have regular customer surveys, as well as a complaints procedure, which is acknowledged within 72 hours of receipt. Health and safety is obviously a necessity for yipworld.com, not only for their clients but also for staff. A recent audit was carried out by the Coalfield Regeneration Trust who were commissioned to visit voluntary sector organisations. The audit proved that yipworld.com were an example of best practice with regard to health and safety. Yipworld.com received the Investors in People award in November 2002, and have re-registered for 2005.
