Ayrshire Business in the Community has identified that there is a genuine willingness on behalf of the private sector to get involved in local communities, although it is clear that businesses in general find it difficult to identify the ‘best fit’ for their resources. The help and assistance offered by the private sector can be seen as fragmented and often goes unrecognised. There is also growing pressure on businesses to demonstrate their corporate social responsibility.

Until now there was currently no easy structured route for a company to identify where its resources would be used to optimum effect. The Ayrshire Business in the Community recognition scheme will provide that route. The aim of the scheme is to develop a process that recognises businesses supportive of and seen as investing in their local communities, whether by financial or non-financial input.

The Awards are available to companies of all sizes - see below for award winners and a selection of their comments.

Award Winners Comments
Stuart Cresswell, ABP Port Manager, Ayr & Troon   "‘All our staff at Ayr and Troon are keen that we play a proactive role in the community, and we are delighted that these efforts have been recognised by this award. Traditionally, ports are at the heart of communities, and we want to keep it that way. "
Stuart Cresswell, ABP Port Manager, Ayr & Troon
Dorothy Handling, B&Q   "We completed our application on-line which meant we could log in and out when we had time, which was great for us as we are always busy.  The Award is an excellent way to recognise what the business has achieved and the Team are delighted to have received local recognition in the form of this Award."
Dorothy Handling of B&Q, Ayr store
Gerry McGinness, Travail   "We’ve always cared about doing our business the right way.  Achieving the Bronze Award has validated what we have already done, at the same time as showing us how much more we can still do to make a difference to the community we serve and are part of."
Gerry McGinness, Regional Director, Travail Employment Group (Ayr)
Edna McElroy, Becogent   "Working on the answers for the Bronze Award helped to ensure that what we hoped and assumed the company was doing was, in fact, being done, not only in Community Investment, but also in Environmental, Health and Safety and Human Resource terms."

David McCall, Munro Architects
Glasgow Prestwick International Airport   "In many ways it has made us realise that our investment in the Community from the smallest fundraising event to the larger scale community involvement, plays a very important part in the development of our Community."
Joyce White of Glasgow Prestwick International Airport
Jim Kerr, Kerr&Smith   "Applying for the Awards is like a self health check or MOT on your own Company, benchmarking yourself against criteria and often realising that your achievements have gone unrecognised or rewarded.  Achieving Bronze Award lets Kerr & Smith demonstrate to Employees, Business Partners and Customers alike, that our Standards/Commitment has been tested."
Jim Smith of Kerr & Smith
Catherine Lang, Bioforce   "We are naturally delighted to have now received the Silver Award for Community Excellence acknowledging our work in the local community and in the wider world.  Having already successfully completed the Bronze entry we were encouraged to move to the next level.  The entry form is very straightforward and there is clear guidance as to what is required."
